MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING

What is an MRI Scan?

MRI, or Magnetic Resonance Imaging, is a safe and non-invasive imaging technique that uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of the body's internal structures.

Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI does not use any radiation, making it ideal for examining the brain, spine, joints, muscles, and soft tissues.

During the scan, you will lie comfortably on a table that slides into a large, tunnel-shaped machine. It’s important to stay still while the images are being taken, and you may hear loud tapping or thumping sounds—these are completely normal.

Preparation for your MRI scan

Our team will provide ear protection, the option of music, and stay in constant communication to ensure your comfort throughout the exam.

Before your appointment, inform our staff if you have any metal implants, pacemakers, or other medical devices, as some may not be compatible with MRI. If you experience claustrophobia or anxiety, let us know in advance—we can offer options to help you feel more comfortable.

Before your scan you may be asked to change into a gown and remove all metal objects, including jewelry, watches, eyeglasses, hearing aids, dentures and clothing with metal fasteners.

Please arrive early to complete any necessary paperwork and discuss your medical history with our team. Our goal is to provide a safe, calm, and supportive experience throughout your MRI procedure.

Contrast MRI Scans

In some MRI exams, a contrast agent may be used to enhance the clarity and detail of the images. The most commonly used MRI contrast agent contains a substance called gadolinium, which helps highlight blood vessels, tissues, and abnormalities that may not be visible on standard MRI scans.

The contrast is usually injected into a vein in your arm during the exam and is generally safe and well-tolerated. Most patients experience no side effects, though mild reactions like a cool sensation at the injection site have been noted.

Before your scan, our team will review your medical history to ensure the contrast is safe for you, especially if you have kidney issues or allergies.
