NATIONAL LUNG CANCER SCREENING PROGAM

What is the NLCSP?
The National Lung Cancer Screening Program in Australia is a government-funded health initiative aimed at detecting lung cancer early in people who are at high risk.
From July 2025, Precision Radiology has been providing free low-dose CT (LDCT) scans to eligible individuals aged 50 to 70 who currently smoke or have a significant history of smoking as part of the NLCSP.
The goal is to find lung cancer at an earlier stage when it is more treatable, improving survival rates and health outcomes. By participating in this screening, patients can take an important step in managing their lung health and potentially catching cancer before symptoms appear.
Who is eligible for the NLCSP?
To qualify for the NLCSP, individuals must satisfy all of the following:
-
Age: Be between 50 and 70 years old.
-
Smoking History: Be a current smoker, or have quit within the last 10 years
-
Cumulative Smoking Exposure: Have at least 30 pack‑years of smoking history—which means roughly a pack a day for 30 years, or two packs a day for 15 years
-
Asymptomatic: Have no signs or symptoms of lung cancer, such as persistent cough, coughing up blood, or unexplained shortness of breath.
Exceptions:
You may not be able to take part in the screening program right now if:
-
You’ve had a chest CT scan in the last 12 months, or have one booked in the next 3 months
-
You’ve recently had a lung infection, such as COVID-19 or pneumonia
-
You’re unable to lie flat and raise your arms above your head for about 5 minutes
Your GP can help determine if any of these apply to you and whether they are temporary or ongoing reasons not to have the scan.
What are the costs involved?
Individuals will need to obtain a request from from their healthcare provider such as their GP, specialist or nurse practitioner who will determine that the above criteria are met. There will be no out of pocket expenses for the LDCT lung scan for eligible individuals.
